Lamentablemente el mismo Connolly mientras hacía su lista dijo que no podía incluir escritores cuya lengua desconocía y cuyas obras había leído solamente en traducciones, por buenas que fueran estas. Así fue como dejó fuera a Dostoievski, Chéjov, Mann, Musil, Svevo y tantos otros, pero elabora esta lista de cien obras modernas del movimiento moderno en Inglaterra, Francia y los EEUU y la divide en seis periodos:
